Luke 2:8-14 NKJV
Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:
14 “ Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
Ordinary turns Extraordinary
Again we see an ordinary activity unfolding. But God was about to change that into a fantastic experience.
The shepherds were tending to their flocks out in the fields. It’s night time. The sheep are gathered together while the shepherds are watching over them to protect them from wolves.
All of a sudden, an angel of the Lord stood right in front of them. The glory of the Lord shone all around them. That probably lit up the night as though it was day time!
The shepherds were afraid. This may be an understatement. Could you imagine being a shepherd and an angel showing up at night?
The angel reassures them not to be afraid and shares good news with them. From this point forward there will be great joy for all people! For on this day a Savior in born. The angel even explains how the shepherds will know it is true – just look for a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.
Next we see a multitude of heavenly beings praising God. This must have been quite a sight to see. One angel was terrifying, now imagine a multitude!
