Time to take out the trash! God calls us to keep our mind fixed on what is lovely, true, pure, praiseworthy, honorable and good. But with so much garbage out there it can sometimes be difficult. Temptation to think, watch, or listen to unhealthy things are everywhere.
Help your small group identify what is ungodly in their life. Help them to take out the trash! Start with prayer asking God to reveal anything that may offend Him and the courage to get rid of it.
Provide some small pieces of paper and pens to write with. Ask your small group to write down one unhealthy thought, or song, or movie, or TV show, or radio program, or book, or magazine per piece of paper. Reassure them you will not read them to the whole group. This is an exercise between them and God.
Spend a good 10 to 15 minutes writing down everything God reveals. With the piles of paper before them, pray “God, you have shown us what is not pleasing to you. Give us the strength to resist these temptations. In Jesus’ name we pray amen.”
Have each person, tear up the paper, and toss in a trash can in the middle of the small group. Another variation is to throw pieces of the paper into a burning fire. This, of course, would mean you have access to a fireplace!
Over the course of a few meetings, ask how everyone is doing regarding the items they “trashed” or “burned”.
