The goal of Bible study is always to apply God’s truth in your life. This is called Application. Applying the truth tends to be the most difficult part of Bible Study process. We developed the C.O.P.E. acrostic to help you formulate an action plan.
C stands for CONFESS
O stands for OBEY
P stands for PLAN
E stands for EVERYTHING IN PRAYER
Let’s review how this acrostic might be helpful to your application of God’s Word.
Use C.O.P.E. acrostic to highlight (1) what may be wrong in your life, (2) what God might be asking you to obey, and (3) to create an action plan for implementing the truth you learned through your study. At each of these steps, you bring them before God in prayer. You literally wrap the whole process in prayer, asking God to help you each step of the way.
C stands for CONFESS – As you study God’s Word, look for sins, errors, or faulty attitudes in the text. As you see a sin, error, or bad attitude, ask yourself if you struggle with it as well. If you do, stop and confess it to God right then. This is where we learn to accept our faults and seek His forgiveness and help to avoid it in the future.
O stands for OBEY – Next, look for truths, examples, or commandments we should obey. Ask yourself if you are obeying this truth. If not, pray for God to help you have the desire to obey it in the future.
P stands for PLAN – Now you have identified things to confess and things to obey, the next step is to make a plan for implementing this truth in your life. This is a crucial step towards victory over sin in our life. Think about the truth you learned about yourself and God. Ask what will I do differently?
E stands for Everything in prayer – Prayer is most crucial part of Bible study. We need to be connected to our Lord God and humble ourselves to be able to hear Him as we study His words. At each step in your study process integrate prayer. Open in prayer to prepare your heart. Talk with God about any sins the Bible reveals. Ask God to help you obey the commands you discover. Seek God’s wisdom for how to implement the truth in your life. Close in prayer by thanking God for His revelation and guidance.
