Summer time can be especially challenging for maintaining healthy small groups for many reasons. First of all the weather turns nice. Second many people take vacations during summer. Third a lot of people just feel like they need a break from Bible study. If you’re a type A small group leader, this can be discouraging.
But the lull we sometimes experience during summer doesn’t have to be discouraging. There is a time and season for everything under the sun the author of Ecclesiastes would say. Consider using this time for relaxing and possibly for fun with your small group.
Summer time provides an opportunity to try new things that you might not normally consider with your small group. Here are a few ideas to get your creativity flowing:
- Meet outside. Pick a local park or someone’s backyard. Being outside helps you focus on God through nature.
- Do something fun together. Go for a walk, play a game, have a tea party.
- Try something new. Have members of group bring their favorite board game. Select one and play it, just for fun.
- Create together. Setup a scrapbook party, make dinner together, paint something, add to a round robin poem.
The point of these suggestions is to break out of the mold. Don’t continue doing the same thing all year round. We were wired with creativity and we long for variety. So give your small group some variety by adding some fun during the summer time.
